What are Distal Spots?

Distal Spots are a type of coloring on or around the coronary band and lower legs of the horse. The horse may have stockings or socks along with distal spots or may simply have a spot or two.  Distal spots are a good identification mark for horses.

Horse may also have “White Spots” that are around the coronary or lower leg.

DISTAL SPOTS: Dark spots on white coronary

WHITE SPOTS: White spots on dark coronary.

OTHER LEG MARKINGS:

Coronet—A white marking covering the coronet band.

Pastern—A white marking from the coronet to the pastern.

Ankle—A white marking from the coronet to the fetlock.

Half-stocking—A white marking from the coronet to the middle of the cannon.

Stocking—A white marking from the coronet to the knee.

Stocking Plus—A white marking like the stocking, but the white extends onto the knee or hock.

White on knee or hock—A separate white mark on the knee or hock.
