HOW THICK IS THE SOLE & WHERE IN THE HOOF IS THE P3?
A simple way to pretty accurately guestimate how thick your horse’s sole is and
where in the hoof capsule the P3 is situated.
- Lay a straight edge across the hoof at the apex. [red lines]
- Measure the distance from the straight edge down to the deepest part of the apex.
- Add ½” to that measurement and that is where the tip of the P3 lies within the capsule. It also gives you the approximate thickness of the sole at the tip of the P3.
- Repeat above steps only across the heels at the deepest, most caudal part of the collateral grooves. This will tell you the approximate position of the heel of the P3 within the capsule and the approximate thickeness of the sole at that area.
- The angle of the collateral grooves/thickness [blue lines] will give you the approximation of the angle of the bottom of the P3 in the capsule.
The more depth at the apex and at the heels means the thicker the sole is. If there is little to no concavity at the apex or the heels then the sole is mostly likely pretty thin.
