– as it is labeled now, used to be what was known and what Gwen taught as “extreme trail courses” … For decades Gwen has taught horses to accept going over bridges, teeter totters, through ‘car washes’, gates, ‘turnstyles and tunnels and even jumping through rings or standing in hula hoops or up on platforms. Now we have a formal program known as Equine Agility. This type of teaching encourages the horse, teaches ‘thinking’ through spooky and scary situations as well as instilling trust and respect for the human partner. It is fun, can be done with horses of all ages and breeds and disciplines. It helps the horse develop the ability to optimally ‘perform’ no matter waht the situation. Trailer loading? Piece of cake. Going through streams? Fun! Going over strange terrain? No problem. The horse learns to adapt and even welcome the challenges that is presented before him.
